Visiting Marrakesh

Marrakesh is one of the biggest tourist hotspots in all of Morocco, the city was founded back in the 11th century and today it has more than a million inhabitants.  It has distinctive architecture with a history of famous authors and philosophers coming together here.  Marrakesh is a cultural hub where the Islamic and Andulusian  cultures come together.

The literal meaning of Marrakesh is the “land of god” and it served as the capital during the Almoravids Dynasty.  The city has a large number of Islamic monuments.  In the 20th century France took control of Morocco and there are still many French establishments still thriving to this day.  Tourists from all over the world to breathe in this richness of culture and heritage.

While there is no shortage of things to see in Morocco here are some of the highlights of tourist destinations you should see while you are in Marrakesh.

Median Souk

This is the biggest and main marketplace found in Marrakesh.  It can be found in the old district and you will be surrounded by history and monuments.  There are narrow aisles of filled with perfume sellers, herbs and brightly colored scarves just to name a few.  Take an entire day and explore the Medina Souk.  Grab some local gifts and souvenirs to bring home.  Most if not all of the trinkets that you can find here were created by local craftsmen and artists.  Here is a look at some of the things you can find in the Souk.

Almoravids Dome

If you have a passion for history and culture then you need to see the Almoravids Dome, it is the oldest surviving monument in all of Marrakesh.  The dome was built back in the 12th century and if you book a tourism package to Morocco this will be included as part of the trip.  The dome is incredibly beautiful inside, while having a rather simple layout it has distinct stone decorations and beautiful features.  For many tourists, especially those that are interested in the history of the area the dome sparks a renewed interest in learning about the Almoravids Dynasty.

Majorelle Gardens

In the middle of the 20th century the famed French artist Jack Morelle visited Morocco due to ill health and it was here he created art that reflected everyday life.  The gardens are the perfect blend of French artistry  and the innate architecture to be found in Morocco.  The garden is filled with local flowers, plants, palm trees and cactuses, all native to the local area.
